- The FactsSmoking affects your body in many ways. Just one cigarette makes your heart beat 15-50 beats per minute above normal. It also temporarily raises your blood pressure by 10-20 points. Chemicals in cigarette smoke cause your heart to get less oxygen and narrow your blood vessels. Smoking limits your lung’s ability to clean themselves properly. If you are pregnant and smoke, you risk having a miscarriage, stillborn, or low birth-weight baby.
- The RisksThe health effects of smoking multiply over time. Smokers are at a higher risk than non-smokers for:
- Various cancers (lung, mouth, bladder, kidney, pancreas, and other organs)
- Heart attacks or other forms of heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Stroke
Your risk of becoming ill from smoking increases the more you smoke. It depends on:
- How long you have smoked
- How much you smoke
- How deeply you inhale
What Can You Do?
The best thing you can do for your health is to quit smoking. When you quit, you will:
- Look Better! Your skin will be less likely to wrinkle early. Also, your teeth and fingers will no longer be stained.
- Feel Better! Your lungs will begin to work more productively. You will feel more energetic and alive.
- Set a Good Example! If you have children, they are twice as likely to become smokers if you smoke.
- Lower Your Risks! Quitting will reduced your risk for lung cancer and heart disease, for example.
